<image:title>blog - Fall Days Are Here, and Halloween Is Just Around the Corner</image:title>
<image:caption>The weather has gotten blustery and rainy here in Western Washington as we he deeper into Fall. Halloween is just around the corner, so my art tribe friends decided to design our own seasonal cards to send to each other to cheer each other up as we continue to work alone in our studios during this time of Covid-19. I decided to include my characters from my first children’s book (still hunting for a publisher and agent). Morley, Lavender, and Pinkney are out trick-or-treating at their friend, Gracie’s house. Gracie’s got a friendly face, so I don’t think they have anything to worry about! Happy Fall and Happy Halloween everyone!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Delightful Critique With Maria T. Middleton, Art Director!</image:title>
<image:caption>I was so very delighted to meet Maria T. Middleton, one of the elective ways of participating in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) L.A. Summer Spectacular! Maria is Art Director at Candlewick Press, and it’s imprint, Walker US. I admit I was a little nervous, especially as we were making the Zoom connection (technology can be scarey), but Maria put me at ease right away. She brought up the first picture I’ve posted here, which is a sketch I did in my travel sketchbook from Paris. What she liked about this picture was my loose line, light touch with the watercolor and the white background. I was pleasantly surprised that she had thoroughly perused my website to get to know my style better. She also liked the design of the map page I did of La Petit Trianon. Once more, lightness of touch and freedom of line was noted, a nice way of creating sense of place and building a world in my illustration. That led to discussing more recent work for the two children’s books that I have written and illustrated. First the opening double page spread of “ Raspberry Rescue” had a lovely feel to the garden, but the unfolding of their garden world could take place in the Inset Pages, or Title Page, then moving more to a close up of the mice as the story begins with more movement in the characters’ bodies. I added that they seemed a little static in the arrangement of how I put them on the page. (Yes! I’m working on my self critiquing of a project that felt finished, but now see how it could be improved.) The State Dining Room from “A Visit to Inveraray Castle” double page spread gave the eye trouble finding a way across the page, and my technique was a little heavy here and not as spontaneous. Maria loved the three unexpected characters of two cubs and a Highland Coo having an adventure together in a Scottish Castle. As much as I love certain parts of the piece, and all the details, I can see that it could be broken up into vignettes leading the reader into a more intimate interaction between the characters the the amazing objects and beauty of this room. I felt very encouraged about what makes my work unique and intriguing to a professional in the publishing business, which is so invaluable! I am excited to put what I have learned into action in my work with fresh eyes and energy, changing up my process a bit to get back to that fresh line and watercolor expression that Maria saw as my strengths. Thank you, Maria T. Middleton!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - What a Spectacular SCBWI Summer Conference!!</image:title>
<image:caption>This was once incredible conference with the most fabulous presenters! May I just name drop a little bit? For me, it started off with a bang with the amazing Judy Blume, interviewed by President of SCBWI, Lin Oliver, Newbury Medal winner, Kwame Alexander, Pura Belpre winner Raul the Third, two acclaimed Caldecott illustrators LeUyen Pham and Dan Santat (brilliantly helpful and affirming), an amazing Editor’s Panel, a delightful conversation with Jane Yolen hosted byHeidi E.Y. Stemple, the very humorous team of Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen (author and illustrator, respectively). Another favorite pairing was Laurie Halse, andMeg Medina. There were many more, but these were the outstanding speakers that gave Me so many take aways to learn from and incorporate into my craft of writing and illustrating picture books for children! I’ve come so far, and there is so much room for growth. I am so inspired by all of the other illustrators in the Portfolio Showcase, and I am setting more goals for improving my portfolio. Summed up in three words: Talent, Persistence, and a little Luck, will hopefully, lead me to and Agent and my first published children’s book!!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Preparing for the SCBWI Los Angeles Summer Spectacular, July 31-August 4, 2020</image:title>
<image:caption>I know you are asking yourself, why a snowy illustration in the middle of summer! Here’s why, I’ve been reading a historical fiction trilogy on the life of King Arthur of England. Yes there is a real King Arthur who lived and reigned in the mid 400’s AD. His life as a warrior king was not exactly that of the legends we know so well set in the later medieval times. This is a scene of Arthur saying goodbye to his queen on a wintry night and his daughter to set off during an unlikely season to defend his kingdom. I am adding this illustration to my portfolio for the SCBWI L.A. Summer Spectacular that will be held virtually this summer. I will be participation in the Portfolio Showcase and Illustrator’s Gallery, and receive a 20 minute private virtual critique from children’s book industry executive (Art Director)! So excited!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I attended the January 11, 2020 meeting of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators , Western Washington chapter, at Seattle Pacific University! I had the priviledge of participating in “The Great Critique” with my book, “ Morley, Lavender, and Pinkney Find a New Friend”, which is looking for a publisher. the critique leader was author Kjersten Hayes, who has also taught art. In her critique of my illustrations she said , “They were detalied, had a great sense of place, good com[position. hints of what was to come, and they danced across the page.” Critquing the writing she said that in the character mapping to make sure that the minor characters were part of the resolution of the problem, and to consider how Morley could have saved himself from the crows. There was round table input as well, which encouraged me to think about the why of the story. I shared that I was thinking in terms of future stories that would have Lavender and Pinkney as heroines in their adventures with Morley, and that Colin might find himself needing a friend in a future story. So note toself, make sure that each character is a part of the solution to the problem in the story. My first critique! Yay!</image:caption>

Each image represents 2 pages of the book and this is my coprighted work, so please do not copy and repost without permission. Using watercolor, colored pencil and micron pen (ink). Morley ( after my father, and a good Scottish name) and Pinkney are so much fun to paint!</image:caption>

I love her illustration style which is similar to my sketchbooking style with pen, ink, and watercolor, but she also adds colored pencil. These little sketches were a fun way to explore her style and to inspire my own illustration goals.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Moselle and Rhine Rivers Sketchbook, Post 11, Basel, Switzerland</image:title>
<image:caption>Basel, Switzerland This is the last post for Moselle and Rhine Rivers sketchbook! We ended our river cruise in Basel, a rather large city which was a mixture of old and new in close proximity to one another. The old town square had an outdoor market with all of the great farm products of the surrounding region, the beautiful town hall and mordern tstreetcars, and shops all mixed together. The last cathedral we visited was a protestant one verlooking the Rhine River with beautiful views from the outside garden and this blue sheep art installation inthe inner courtyard. I loved the black, white, blue and red graphic prints on these mannequins in the windows of Dolce & Cabbana, and this Cartier sign that was hanging ourside the shop for watches. Basel is a very beautiful, bright, and energetic city to visit!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Moselle and Rhine Rivers Sketchbook, Post 10, Strasbourg, France</image:title>
<image:caption>Grand Isle in the center of the Old Historic Town Center of Strasbourg has beautiful views, old timbered medieval buildings and a great market place for tasting cheese, brioche, meats, wines, and beatiful flowers! Storks are a symbol of the Alsace Region of France and nest in trees lining the residential areas of Alsace. You can see these nests in tree after tree, one after another, on roofs and on chimney tops! They symbolize happiness faithfulness, and good luck, and fertility. Storks migrate from Africa to winter in the Alsace region. Strasbourg was first mentioned in 12 BC, and over the past 2,000 years it has been influenced by both French and German cultures as power has passes back and forth from one side of the Rhine River to the other. It's a beautiful blend of cultures!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here she is, Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Barvaria , (1596-1662), becase queen when her husband, Frederick V was elected as King of Bavaria in 1619 and he was defeated in battke at the beginning of the 30 Year War at the start of the Reformation in 1620. Elizabeth Stuart was gifted the glorious gate at Heidelberg Castle as a birhtday present for his beloved wife. She was the granddaughter of Mary, Queen of Scots, and daughter of James I of England (James VI of Scotland). Elizabeth and Frederick V of Bavaria were married to each other at the young age of 16, February 14, 1613 in London, stayed in England 2 months, then headed to the Electoral Court of Heidelberg in 1613. The couple had 13 children, and when Frederick died at age 38 of fever, Elizabeth was devastated. She was exiled to the Hague, then returned to England in 1661, and died of pneumonia in 1662. What a life story of a princess of both Scotland and England, then Queen of Bavaria!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Moselle and Rhine Rivers Sketchbook, Post 8, Heidelberg, Germany</image:title>
<image:caption>Our first stop was Heidelberg Castle high on the ridge above the town overlooking the Neckar River! The views are stunning and the castle mostly in ruins, but with a lovely courtyard, a shop, and incredible weinstube under the castle where we were able to be refreshed! The beautiful red sandstone gate known as "Elizabeth's Gate", was irresistabel to want to draw, and paint and once home I learned much more about Elizabeth (more about her in Thursday's post). After having wurst and beer in a beautiful square in the town center, we looked at shops where I found the perfect little dirndl dress to bring home for our granddaughter in jewel box of a tiny shop located near the Catherdral of the Holy Spirit. We enjoyed an organist's playing and lit candles for healing in the cathedral. Another special day, with my friend Luanne!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Moselle and Rhine Rivers Sketchbook, Post 6, Rudesheim and Kaub, Germany</image:title>
<image:caption>We stopped in Rudesheim for the eveing. Walked into town along a lovely riveside park on the Rhine. We found the main sqaure filled with neatly trimmed trees, flowers, and wine tasting stalls. We had a glass of Reisling to sit and sip as we enjoyed the evening air. We spent the next day cruising down the Rhine passing castle village one after another as we rounded each bend in the river. We were treated to a demonstration of how to make a Rudesheim Coffee with brandy. Delicious!! We passed Kaub, with the iconic Pfalzgrafenstein Castle on anisland in the middle of the river. Chains stretched across the river used to block the way of boats passing until a toll was paid to the keepers of the castle, then allowed to pass. No tolls today!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Markcburg Castle, Braaubach, Germany This castle is the best preserved Rhine Medievil Castle laid out in 1219 and completed in 1231, it It sits high atop the pinacle of a 1,000 mountain overlooking the Rhine River. Fortified by it's placement on the rocky promintory, it's high walls, and mutiple gates leading to the castle keep maintained it's dominace despite the many attempts by invaders and land grabbers over the centuries. Here you can see the stables of the king and his knight's horses, the kitchens that kept the castle running, and the bedcamber of Johannes Ludwig XIV. Even the sweetness of a beautiful little herb garden tucked neatly along a high castle walkway graces the castle with it's simple beauty. The castle shop offers charming gifts, and refreshments to enjoy on the outside terrace offering a panaramic view of the Rhine River below.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Moselle and Rhine River Sketchbook, Post 2, Trier</image:title>
<image:caption>We toured Trier this morning, once an impotant Roman center of trade and commerce, almost 2,000 years ago. The Porta Nigra was the city gate to Trier. At the top of high hillside overlooking Trier were more Roman ruins, as well as the ruins of a Roman arena that we passed on our way up to the viewpoint. Once back in the center of town, attended the Easter Sunday services at the oldest catherdral in Germany. The choir and pipe organist were amazing, the hymns familiar but in German, and the swinging of the giant incense lamp a sight to behold! A Celt community existed here, which predates Roman times. Celts continued to migrate east and northward eventually populating Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. We made our way through the center of town with beautifully built stone and stucco buildings with businesses on the ground floors and apartments on the higher floors. It was a lovely pedestrian only zone with a visitors' kiosk and carousel in the central square. All of my work on this page was stright to pen and ink, then watercolor.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After leaving Paris, we bussed through Northeast France to the tiny country of Luxembourg for lunch and a quick look around the city ofLuxembourg. We walked up to the main square to the Palais Town Center, had a delightbul lunch at the La Boucherie Restaurant where everything was decorated in red and white. Later we went to the Battle of the Bulge Memorial Cemetary. Remembering those who had lost their lives in the battle was a very moving experience, and we paid our respects at the grave of General George S. Patten. We must never forget the high price for freedom that has been paid for us. From Luxembourg we drove down from the mountaintop of Luxembourg to the Moselle River and crossed into Germany to the ancient city of Trier. We boarded our Viking Cruise Ship, got settled in our cabin, had a wonderful white tablecloth dinner getting to know our fellow shipmates, a briefing on the next day's activities, and a wonderful night's sleep in a gently rocking bed! Heavenly!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Paris Sketchbook, Post 17, San Chapelle and Notre Dame de Paris</image:title>
<image:caption>Good Friday at San Chapelle and Notre Dame After standing in the pouring rain for an hour, we were able to get in to see the beautiful San Chapelle. A jewelbox of a cathedral rebuilt by King Louis XIV to protect the precious relics of the Crown of Thorns and a piece of the Cross. the relics were purchased by Louis the IX from Emporer Boudoin II in 1239. Traveling with our dear friends, one of whom was fighting Stage 4 ovarian cancer and brain caner, we were able to witmess her courage in so many ways. Today was an increidible day as she climbed the windng staircase to view the royal portion of this chapel, then when time to descend the staircase, she joyfully said, "Look out below, I'm coming down!" We all made it safely down! Next, we walked to Notre Dame just a couple of blocks away. With long lines for Good Friday services, we were able to enter through the disabled entrance and the Knights of Columbus escorted she and I to a seat in the packed cathedral. The service was given in French, English , and Spanich, and the Crown of Thorns relic symbolized in gold was on display on the altar. A Good Friday we will never forget! </image:caption>

<image:caption>Musee d' Orsay was all about the Impressionists for me! After lingering through the gound floor atrium of marble statues, we headed for the third floor Impressionists. Moving, emotional, and ters of joy at seeing Monet, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh, Vuillard, Sisely, Sargeant and more. Claude Monet's "Essai de figure en plein air (vers la droite)", 1886, is of his step-daughter, Suzanne Horschede. He painted many versions of her, this is only one of them. A note on my own work in this sketchbook, almost all of my sketches are drawn in ink first, no pencil drawing, then watercolored. This challenged me to trust my drawing ability and to live with the mistakes! Later, we had a wonderful lunch in th Orsay's beautiful restauranet filled with incredible light, greek statues, glorious chandeliers , and colorful modern furnishings! You must go!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Paris Sketchbook Post 15, The Louvre</image:title>
<image:caption>The Louvre in the former palace of the kings of queens of France is sp beautiful and massive that we had to make some decisions about what was a priority for us to see. We started with the antiquities, focusing on the Winged Lady, c. 190 B, marble of the Aegean Sea, Greece, and Venus, c. 100 BC, marble, Greece. What a thrill to see these great statues! We also saw the paintings of the Italina Rennaisance, including the Mona Lisa, and the Romantic Period paintings of the 1800's. This painting, a portrait of Mme. Mole Reymond, was painted by the portrait artist of Marie Antoinette, Mme. Le Brune Vigee, in 1842. I loved the light, color, and the personality she captured in this portrait! I was walking so quickly through this gallery with liimited time, but she stopped me in my track!! The artists was exiled from France during th French Revolution, but continued to paint commissioned portraits throughout Europe for many years. She later returned to her home of France after receiving a pardon for being a portrait artist to the former royal family.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On a very rainy day in Paris, our friends Lu and Smitty joined us in touring the city. We had watched the movie, "Midnight In Paris" before coming to the City of Lights. Lu and I share a great love of art and the Belle Epoque era, so we had to see Montmartre! We walked past the artists's park up the Rue Norvins to see San Pietro and Sacre Cour to pray for healing for Lu. Later our taxi driver drove past the Moulin Rouge, then back down to the Eiffel Tower. We had lunch at La Tourville and Cafe des Officiers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After a wonderful day's outing to Versailles, we took theVersailles Train back into the city of Paris disembarking near the Eiffel Tower on the Champ de Mars. We walked along the banks of the River Seine, as we approached the tower feeling smaller and smaller the closer we got to the foot of the 1,000 foot tower of steel. It was built 100 years after the beginning of the French Revolution by Gustav Eiffel a world renowned bridge builder. We did not ascend the tower, but took in the sheer mass of the structure which is difficutl to represent in a painting. Under the legs of the tower are many ornate kioks of postcards and souvenirs, and amazingly delicate antigue carousels that soften the strong contrasting lines of the tower. Our hometown Seattle Space Needle shrinks in comparison to the monolith of Le Tour Eiffel!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Paris Sketchbook, Post 12, The Hamlet at Versailles</image:title>
<image:caption>Marie Antoinette commissioned The Hamlet to be built in 1783 to look like it was set deep in the French countryside rather than on the estate of Versailles. It was a retreat for her children and a gathering place for her friends. There is a small countryhouse, a billards room, smaller cottages built on a lake and small creeks which are surrounded by flower and vegetable gardens and orchards. There is also a small dairy and other farm animals. This was my favorite part of Versailles and is worth the long walk or ride to the back of the estate grounds to enjoy. In this illustration, I superimposed the Queen with two of her children sitting on the lawn by the lake, as I imagine she loved to do. This part of the painting was inspired by the original hanging in Versailles. The rest of The Hamlet, I painted from my photographs that I took when we were there. I love the familial joy and the desire to provide something more normal for her children that this illustrates!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Versailles Grand, glorious, imposing...glowing like gold in the early morning sunshine. Built by King Louis XIV, who transferred his court from Paris in 1682. During his reign (1715-1774), his absence from the capital of Paris, the ideas of revolution began to grow. King Louis th XV resided here as well, but it was during the reign of King Ouis XVI and Marie Antioinette, the atmosphere of hostility towards the crown boiled over into revolution (1774-1792). This place is glorious, and the grandeur is almost overwhelming to the senses. The chapel, the Hall of Mirrors, the Hall of Kings and Queens, and the increidble art were astounding and amazing! More to com of this grand estate...!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Founding designer, Coco Chanel, and Karl Lagerfeld, who is the current head designer for the House of Chanel have always been intriguing to me. The classic, clean lines, feminie colors, and pearls and chains have been a staple of these designers palette for the clothes of Chanel. In the Galleria Lafayette's main floor I fould a large photo of Karl Lagerfeld hanging in the Chanel handbag display. The stain glass ceiling of the Galleria is a rainbow of colorss shining in an open atrium of several stories of balconies overlooking a main floor of makeup boutiques, including that of Lansome Paris. Lancome Paris, another favorite, after being gifted some Lancome makeup for a friends' wedding many years ago. This place was a delight to my sense of color and design! An expected bonus was the amazing view of the Paris skyline from the rooftop deck! The Paris Opera in close proximity and the Eiffel Tower in the distance made even more spectacular by a brisk April wind and stormy sky!</image:caption>

<image:caption>After visiting the Repetto Ballet Shop, we walked on past the Cafe de la Paix where those who love opera and ballet gather for after performance socializing, to the amazingly grand Opera National de Paris Garnier! The architecture is amazing and the interior is opulent, to say the least, and as magical as a fairy tale! After ascending the grand staircase, we got to take a peak into the auditorium's intircate balconies. The stage crew was in the midst of a tech rehearsal so the lights were down, but what we could see was increidble! This is the home of the Paris Opera Ballet and many of the spectacular costumes are on display here in glass cases in the public areas of the opera house. They were so beautiful and fantastically detailed. Some of the backstage areas are open for viewing including the libraries of operas, choreiographer and designer's notes. If you love opera, ballet, architecture, you must see this when you go to Paris!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rue de la Paix As we continued our stroll past amazing shops with names I've known almost all of my life, I saw a shop with large tall, beautiful windows with gorgeous chandeliers lighting a coloful main floor with dance shoes of every color! While feeling intimidated by the designer shops, this shop was for dancers...this I could do with confidence! The Repetto Ballet Shop was created by the mother of Roland Petit, French Choreographer, in 1947. We walked through the main floor, then followed the grand staircase to the second floor which was filled with dance clothes, a wall of soft ballet shoes, and a dance costume shop with hand made tutus! What a glorious place to see for this "dance mom" and a dance lover myself!</image:caption>

One of my favorite movies is French Kiss with Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan, and here we were! The ironwork in the circle was in a window above a door on the Rue Castiglione, and the knocker on the blue door was brass locatd on the Rue de la Paix. <image:caption>Tuilleres Garden I woke up at 4 AM after the fisrt day in Paris. Jet lag, excitement, whatever, I don't know, so I got out my sketchbook and paints, and sat on the edge of the bath tub(so I wouldn't wake my husband) and started sketching in ink, then painted. Let's say it shows excuberance! We had taken the metro to the Tuilleres Garden to start our first day in Paris after arriving that morning. No rest, straight to getting to know the City of Lights! The Jardin des Tuileries was built in 1564, by Queen Catherine des Medici, at the Tuillerie Palace, five years after the death of her husband, Henry II. In 1667, it was first opened for public viewing. In the last two centureies it has been open to the public for relaxation, walking, and entertainment. My favoroites were the sculptures, trees and the ornate lamps seen all over Paris. So beautiful!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Seattle to Pairs So excited to get on the plane to fly to Paris and create my first travel sketchbook! The sketch on the left I did while waiting to board after getting to SeaTac airport very early! On board the flight, I practiced French and listedned to podcasts from Rick Steves Travel website on the history of Paris, and guided tours through the Louvre and Versailles, and did this sketch. Most of the sketches I will be sharing with you I did after I got home from photos, because of the pace of our touring didn't allow for sitting and sketching very often. Here and there, I found time to do sketching while traveling, and I'll make note of those. I hope you enjoy traveling with me as I revisit Paris in my blog posts!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Paris...The City of Lights! Preparing for Paris and beyond was a delight in itself. Before every trip, I do lots of research, schedule out our days, and read map after map. Bus lines, metro, trains, museum maps are all part of the preparation that's part of the fun...even practice sketches of places or things that I haven't drawn or painted before. These are the first pages of a hardbound sketchbook in which I recorded our visit to Paris, Luxemberg, and a Viking River Cruise down the Moselle and Rhine Rivers. After Paris we visited both sides of those rivers in France and Germany, ending in Basel, Switzerland. I hope you are ready for a wonderful trip as I reminisce. I blogging about this trip on Mondays and Thursdays each week. Enjoy! </image:caption>

<image:caption>As we continued along the road past Loch Stornoway once more, I had to stop and photograph a very large stone stable along the roadside that we had passed earlier in the day. Being an equestrian, I was fascinated, and learned later from Duncan, after returning home to the U.S., that there possibly could be a connection here, too. The stable was part of the Carse House Estate where my ancestors may have also been tenants. The CCEF Scotland Tour 2017 was incredible! Scotland was all that I had dreamed of finding and so much more! The 2020 tour is already in the planning, so when it’s time, be sure to go! You don’t want to miss it! Many, many thanks to His Grace, the Duke of Argyll for hosting us in such a way that we felt welcomed home! Thanks to the marvelous tour organizers, Carl Guilford, CCNA President, and Cari Campbell! Thank you to the Friends of the Argyll Papers, to Diarmid and Alison! Thank you, with a very grateful heart, to Duncan Beaton for your diligent research, enthusiasm for the history of Scotland and the Campbell Family! Thank you, John Campbell of Kilberry, for your warm help and assistance to a fellow Campbell looking for her roots in Kilberry!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 31, Coulaghailtro at Port Ban and Kilberry Church, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>We had lunch in Coulaghailtro, on Port Ban, at a cafe down this little lane traversing the pastureland to the bay. Across the Sound of Jurra the islands of Jurra and Arran can be seen in the distance. Potato farming and herring fishing were the primary uses of the land and sea. Today, in addition to these, land owners raise sheep and cattle. I learned from the archivist, after we returned home, that my family had also lived and worked in the township of Coulaghailtro just up the hill behind where I painted this scene! Goosebumps! We turned around to head back towards Tarbert to look for Kilberry Church (built in 1821) which we located about 10 minutes south of the village on a hillside above the road above another burn. This is the parish where my ancestors were married and children were baptised! I climbed up the steps hoping to find the church unlocked. Alas, the thick, heavy, large key holed door was not open, but leaning next to it was a blackberry wood walking stick just like the one I inherited from my Uncle Marvin! I might not have been able to see inside the place of worship where my ancestors were married and baptized, but I did feel a deep reverence and connection to this church! </image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 29, Kilberry Castle and Stones, Kilberry, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>Turning left onto a gravel drive we first came upon The Kilberry Stones which are on display under an open-air shelter. Kilberry has been a sight of Christian worship since the early 14th Century, as evidenced by the stones, which were once housed in the Campbell Mausoleum next to the remains of the church’s foundation at Kilberry Castle. They are now maintained by Historic Scotland. We drove on down the drive to the castle, gathered up my watercolor sketch book of our Scotland trip, and had the joy of meeting John Campbell, Laird of Kilberry Castle! I told him of my quest to see the lands where my Campbell family were born, married, and had worked before immigrating to Canada. I explained the research help that Duncan and the Friends of the Argyll Papers were providing, and that I had met the Duke of Argyll at the Inveraray Games the day before. Yes, I know, some shameless name dropping, but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, right? John Campbell was very gracious in telling me how to find the border (a burn or small stream) between the current Campbell of Kilberry owned lands and the Ormsary lands at Crear which are now owned by the Lithgow Estate. He also told us how to find the Kilberry Church ( which we unknowingly had passed as we headed to Kilberry, as it Iooks very much like a two story home). I showed him the watercolor painting that I did of an early 20th Century photo of Kilberry Castle that I had found on line, and asked him about the couple standing in front of the castle. To his astonishment, John said it was his great aunt and uncle, the mother and father of Miss Marion Campbell (who I had read about in my research). He showed me the original photo from a family album…more serendipitous blessings! Thank you, John Campbell, for being so warm and helpful to us on such an important day in our journey! I am so grateful!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This post is mostly self-explanatory in the sketchbook itself. I would add a thanks, once again, to Duncan Beaton, Archivist for the Argyll Papers at Inveraray Castle, for researching the names of my 4th Great-Grandfather and Grandmother Campbell. This gave us the information we needed to know where to drive to see the countryside where they lived, having been tenant farmers on the lands of John Campbell of Kilberry. We felt very adventuress traveling on our own driving onto small ferries, over mountain passes on a one lane road, followed by another ferry ride into Tarbert on the small ferry in my painting. Here the water looks serene, but it was quite choppy and windy as we crossed over Loch Fyne!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 26, The Duke of Argyll, Chief of Clan Campbell, Inveraray, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>During the Inveraray Highland Games, I had the great honor to have another moment with His Grace, the 13th Duke of Argyll, when I was able to share with him my Scotland Sketchbook, and my family connection to Clan Campbell. The Duke graciously agreed to autograph my pages with the painting of Inveraray Castle! What a family treasure this book will be! How does one summarize in a few words over 800 years of the Campbell Clan and their Chiefs? It is challenging, but here is my best attempt! Surprisingly, the first Campbells were thought to be from England, in the kingdom of Strathclyde, sent to Scotland to protect the king's lands. The Campbell Chiefs take their Gaelic name, Mac Cailein Mor, from Colin Mor Campbell, who died in 1296 in a dispute with the MadDougalls of Lorne. His son, Sir Neil Campbell was friend and brother-n-law of King Robert the Bruce. Sir Neil's son, Sir Colin Campbell was rewarded by Robert the Bruce with land in the Western Highlands, and soon became the most powerful family in this area of Scotland. Down through the centuries, the Clan Campbell Chiefs, descending from knights, were given additional lands and titles of Earl of Argyll, to ColinCampbell in 1477, then to duke with Archibald Campbell, 10th Earl and 1st Duke of Argyll down to our present day Torquhil Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll born 1968. In American terms, he is the patriarch of my extended Campbell family!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 25, Inveraray Highland Games, Inveraray, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>Inveraray Highland Games, Inveraray Castle, Scotland Tuesday, July 18, 2017, we awoke in Oban, dawned our best Highland attire and headed for Inveraray. We gathered in Church Square at the head of Inveraray's main street. Excited crowds were gathering for the arrival of His Grace, the Duke of Argyll, Chief of Clan Campbell, his family, and the Inveraray & District Pipe Band (2017 World Champion). Our host, His Grace, provided us with shortbread and wee drams of Clan Campbell Scotch Whiskey. We all had the honor of meeting the His Grace and his children. What a moment that was...unforgettable! We then fell in behind the pipe band, the Duke, and his three children, Lord Archie, Lord Rory, and Lady Charlotte. We paraded through town to the park on the grounds of Inveraray Castle. When we arrived at the park, we were special guest of His Grace, the Duke of Argyll, and were hosted in the Sponsors' Tent. There we met Her Grace, the Duchess of Argyll! The Inveraray Highland Games included several piping and highland dancing competitions, track and filed, heavy events, wrestling, cycling, and the World Champion Caber Championship. There were great food tents (I had a delicious venison burger), and vendors' tents with beautiful highland crafts. I joined the Friends of the Argyll Papers (which benefits the preservation of the Argyll Archives) at their tent. My Campbell Cousin, Marie, her husband, Don, and I took a second tour of Inveraray Castle. The guides gave us private access to the main rooms as we soaked in the gorgeous ambiance, and incredible history of our Clan Campbell castle! This day will always be remembered as a day of family, honor, and celebration for me! Thank you, Your Graces, Duke and Duchess of Argyll for one of the most amazing days of my life!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 24, Kilmartin, Carnasserie Castle, and Temple Wood, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>Kilmartin, Carrnesserie Castle and Temple Wood, Scotland On this very special day of out Scotland tour our group of 37 travelers divided up three ways to see a variety of sights in Western Argyll. Our groups tour guide was Inveraray Castle Archivist, Duncan Beaton, and what a wonderful guide he was! We visited Carrnesserie Castle set high on a hill that overlooks Kilmartin Glen. This castle was built by John Campbell, Bishop of the Isles. The Campbells of Auchinbrecks' Duncan Campbell were ruined after Argyll's Rising in 1685. The walled garden gate was so lovely, and the joy of climbing to the top of the tower keep, with friend Marilyn, was so joyful! We visited the Kilmartin Church and viewed the carved burial slabs of medieval knights, and had a lovely lunch at the Kilmartin Hotel and Pub. Next, we went down to the Kilmartin Glen to visit the Temple Wood. There are large standing stones from the Bronze age, 3,000 years old, scattered across the glen, two circles of standing stones, and burial cairns. This glen was used as a place for rituals and funerary activities.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 23, Isle of Iona, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>Isle of Iona To get to this jewel of an island, we ferried across from Oban to the Isle of Mull, driving west on a one lane road over mountains and moors to a small ferry , crossing turquoise waters to the Isle of Iona, locatedin the Inner Hebrides. The color of the water surrounding island was like that of the Caribbean Sea and crystal clear! Iona is known as the "Cradle of Christianity'" in Scotland. This was the home of the first Gaelic monastic abbey founded by St. Columba. He came from an abbey in Ireland where he and another bishop and their followers had fought over leadership in Ireland with many lives being lost. Columba , being exiled, and in repentance landed in Scotland on the Mull of Kintyre in 563 with 12 disciples. They made their way eventually to the Isle of Iona where he founded the Abbey of Iona. It was a functioning abbey for over 300 years. The abbey led the conversion of the Picts of Scotland and the Anglo-Saxons of Northumbria to Christianity. In addition, the first great Celtic crosses were sculpted here, and the birthplace of the practices and traditions of Celtic Christianity was towards the end of the 8th century , and Iona may have played a part in the beginnings of the Book of Kells. Today, the island of Iona, which was purchased from the Duke of Argyll in 1979, then donated to the National Trust of Scotland, is an ecumenical community consisting of different Christian traditions which worship at the abbey and provide retreats. What a beautiful place to retreat, find peace, and rest!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 22, Glen Coe, Loch Ness, and Oban, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>These pages meld a couple of days' adventures from exploring Urghart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness, to the awe-inspiring views of Glen Coe, and the legendary Dunstaffnage Castle near Oban. I think we've all been fascinated at some point by the legend of Nessie of Loch Ness. On a day, such as this, with the inky blue waters of Loch Ness brooding darkly below Urghart Castle, it's not hard to imagine what spotting an unusual look to a wave might stir in one's imagination. My mind, being an equestrian, much prefers the Scottish Highland legend of the water horses known as Kelpies. As legend has it, Kelpies are malevolent spirits in the shapes of a horses that live in the lochs and rivers of the Highlands. Herem befire Urghart Castke was byukt, St. Columba is said to have made his first conversion in Scotland of a Pictish noban named Emchath. The nobleman was on his deathbed sometime between 562-586. The nobleman, his son, and his household were converted to Christianity. As we headed to Glen Coe, the westher turned very wet and windy, which put all the streams and waterfalls on the River Coe to gushing down the mountainsides into one great waterfall near the vista of the Three Sisters mountains, Bidean nam Bian! This made this incredible volcanic valley even more epic! What a thrill! In Oban we visited Dunstaffnage Castle built by the McDougalls in the 13th Century, lords of Lorn. As early as the 7th Century this site may have been a stronghold of Dal Riata (Gaelic overkingdom occupying parts of western Scotland and northeastern Ireland). James III granted the castle to Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll in 1470. During the Civil War in 1745, heroine, Flora MacDonald was held here for a period of time. She helped Bonnie Prince Charlie to escape Scotland from the British Loyalists.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook Post 21, Inverness and Culloden, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>Inverness is set alongside the banks of the River Ness. We loved the quiet and lovely walk along the river, meditative moments in Inverness Cathedral, and strolling across the Victorian age "Ladies Walk" swinging bridge . We felt a part of the community for a few moments as we strolled with Inverness locals out walking their dogs along the river. The next day we went to visit the Culloden Battlefield and Interpretive Center. This is an incredibly solemn place out on the moor where the final battle of a civil war in the British Isles that divided families and friends, yes, and clansmen, on different sides of the battle, took place. After learning about the battle we walked out onto the moor to find, among the stones marking where each clan fell in the battle with the British Regiments and were buried that day, the Campbell Stone. Many of us gathered around the stone to have our picture taken in this sacred spot. Though we came from all over the U.S., we were family standing around that stone on Culloden Moor.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After driving through the Cairngorm mountains across the moors to the farmlands of Cawdor Castle where we had lunch in the tea room of the castle. So yummy! Lady Cawdor, herself, led our group on a tour of the castle. The castle is her home which opens up a portion of it each summer for public viewing. The main castle was built in 1380 by William Thane of Cawdor, Legend says that a dream prompted him to allow a mule loaded with gold to roam freely and when it stopped to lie down and rest under a hawthorn tree is the place where the castle was built. In 1638 the north wing was added , and in 1684, Sir Hugh Campbell the 15th Thane transformed the interior to a warm and comfortable home. Moe improvements were made in the mid 17th and 19th centuries. The castle was the setting of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" . The surrounding grounds and gardens with a delightful, "secret" walled knot garden.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook, Post 19, Dunkeld on the River Tay, Scotland</image:title>
<image:caption>Driving through Dunkeld, we crossed the arched bridge over the deep royal blue of River Tay, then followed a drive through a glen where we spotted red deer in the distance. Walking through large old shade trees we came to Dunkeld Cathedral along the banks of the River Tay. A Christian community was formed here in the 6th Century by St. Columba (Isle of Iona Abbey), and the cathedral was built C. 1,000 A.D. Highlights for me were the stone Celtic crosses, the Alpha and Omega blue and gold carpet in fron of the chancelry, and the stone slabs in the ancient cemetery with worn carvings. A certain tabby cat was sunning himself on one such stone, which instantly inspired the "The Legend of The Tabby of Tay"! You'll have to wait for it! We enjoyed quiet contemplative time along the river. Later we enjoyed staying at the Hilton Dunkeld House and Country Club, a summer house built by the 6th Earl of Atholl, a favorite place where Beatrix Potter spent time writing! How awesome is that? I have always loved Beatrix Potter's stories and her watercolor illustrations! Here at Dunkeld House I enjoyed the best salmon dinner, fresh from the River Tay, and the yummiest Sticky Taffy Pudding for dessert!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Banockburn and Stirling Castle "Alba gu brath", Gaelic, meaning Scotland Forever. The first War of Scottish Independence was won at the Battle of Banockburn, fought June 23-24 1314 on the meadow below the volcanic cliff on which Stirling Castle is built. Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, 1306-1329, led the victory over the English forces. "It is in the truth not for glory, nor riches we are fighting, for that alone which no honest man gives up, but with life itself," Robert the Bruce. Stirling Castle was the castle that held the control of the Highlands, built in 1110. Today it's grandeur still reigns over Scotland with an incredibly beautiful restoration with costumed guides to retell the story of the castle and the Scottish spirit of freedom. A majestic and glorious site!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This view of Edinburgh is attributed to photographer, Colin Baxter. I love how it shows the great volcanic rock that Edinburgh Castle was built on. Stone walls have been unearthed at this sight dating back to the Bronze Age 3,000-5,000 years ago! A lithograph of a view from the ramparts of the castle has hung in our home since we were first married. Visiting the Castle was like walking back in time into that lithograph from 1837. Below the view of Edinburgh, I painted little symbols of other great remembrances of our 3 days in Edinburgh: (l.-r.) 1. A street sign near the Supreme Courts of Scotland for a pub on the Royal Mile; 2. The Crown of Scotland, C. 1540 from seeing the Honours of Scotland at Edinburgh Castle; 3. The great dome of St. Giles Cathedral, where John Knox preached and the mother church of Presbyterians; 4. A statue of a reclining horse in from of the Scotland National War Museum at the Castle with the shield of Scotland, which, in my interpretation, pays tribute to all of the brave horses that gave their lives in the protection of Scotland; 5. A stain glass window of the Duke of Argyll's Coat of Arms in the Great Hall at the Castle representing the contributions of the Campbell Clan to Scotland; and, 6. A red poppy growing near Scotland's Parliament Building in memory of those who lost their lives at Flanders Fields in WWI, and all others who have given their lives for their country.</image:caption>

The forest gardens are open to the public, but we had the privilege of a private showing, a step back in time to view the interior of this lovely home. In the main salon, this charming protrait captured my attention. In the chamber rooms this little sleeping alcove was so cozy. I took some artistic license with the curtains and brightened the pale pink to red stripes to match the red in the young lady's portrait. The most notable Campbell of Arkinglas was Sir James Campbell, 2nd Baronet of Ardkinglas , c. 1666-1782, a British Memeber of Parliament. You can read more in his memoir online.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We headed for Scotland on July 4th, 2017, after months of anticipation and preparation. Very fittingly, we flew on a Boeing 747, which my dad had been a part of building starting in 1967, which brought my family out from Atlanta, Georgia to Seattle, Washington. We stayed near the airport that night and met the CCNA Tour Group the next morning in the Galsgow Airport, where wegot on our bus and were on our way. First stop was the legendary Loch Lomond! "Oh, on the bonnie, bonnie shores of Loch Lomand," was brought to mind as the mist kissed the hills above the lake, and a bright sunlight shown through the clouds. A lone swan and several ducks were getting their morning snacks near the shore, as we strolled along the pebbled sandy beach. Cottages with charming flower pots flanking colorful doors, framed in iron hardware were available for a rural Scottish getaway!</image:caption>

<image:title>blog - Scotland Sketchbook Post 4</image:title>
<image:caption>These two pages in my Scotland Sketchbook are a bit of a "jump around". My research before the trip led me to John and Catherine Campbell and Kilmartin Castle. This was because of a gravestone marker located in Canada for a John Campbell, which said Kilmartin, Scotland. That being said, my research of the parish records and those of a that of Duncan Beaton, a Campbell Archivist at Inveraray Castle in Scotland, pointed to Kilberry. Both areas are close geographically in the Western Highlands of Argyll. The page on the left is a mix of information I learned before, during, and after the trip. Through my 3rd and 4th great-grandmothers I have two more Scottish Clans in my family tree, the Crawfords and the MacFarlanes!</image:caption>

<image:caption>As I prepared for the trip, I starting researching the places we would visit in Scotland, with great excitement, and joined Ancestry.com. Each name I explored led me to something else that led me to read an article about Miss Marion Campbell of Kilberry, Argyll, Scotland. She was an authoress and archaeologist who's life work was invaluable to locating many of the great ancient markers and stones in Scotland. I found this image of Kilberry Castle on the internet, which I painted in my sketchbook, not yet knowing how important this place was in the history of my family!</image:caption>
